John R Neeson
Venue Specific Project
Bringing together the artist’s skill in creating ‘tricks of the eye’ and his interest in the traditions of still life painting, John R Neeson presents a new iteration of his ongoing Shelf/Still life and Venue Specific projects for Tricking the eye—contemporary trompe l’oeil. Drawing on the centuries-old tradition of trompe l’oeil painting (or ‘trick of the eye’), this exhibition curated by Lisa Sullivan brought together the work of a number of contemporary Australian artists whose paintings, sculptures and moving images are intentionally illusionistic, play with perspective or are something other than what they first appear to be. Includes works by Chris Bond, Daniel Crooks, Georgina Cue, Gregory Hodge, Jess Johnson, Jan Murray, Ricky Swallow and Anne Zahalka, as well as commissioned works specifically for the exhibition by Colleen Ahern and Tully Moore, Stephen Bowers and John R Neeson.
