Tristan Chant
Titans
Tristan Chant’s Titans brings together historical and contemporary artefacts as a conduit for the evaluation of hierarchical shifts in cultural value. Prior to the 21st Century our consumption of culture was predominantly passive. We read, travelled and viewed cultural works with relative freedom. We made conscious choices about the type of content we consumed and when we wished to do so. With the advent of the internet, mobile devices, social media and streaming platforms our control of the how, what and when increasingly comes through the actions of others. Our insatiable thirst for more, both in volume and access, has resulted in a technological revolution that drives our mode of thinking. What we now see, hear and experience is largely determined by the surveillance of big tech companies that seek to disrupt the way we access content by forming constructed networks as a mode of governance. Across a series of eight works Chant’s looming cyclopes playfully stare down at the everyday being – the you and the me – beckoning us to look inwards and ask ourselves “Have we have gone too far to wind the clock back, or do we succumb and buckle up for the ride?”
